Codecademy offers an easy way to learn and develop programming skills! The site, which has grown considerably since our first review in 2012, offers an interactive approach to help students learn to code apps and websites — at no cost.
At this time, students can choose various avenues to explore including:
- HTML and CSS
In each of the units above, a variety of different programming skills are introduced — from variables and operators to tables and arrays.
There are many ways to use this site. But one of the best for educating at home may be found in the Class Resources section. The student progresses through eight units containing a total of 145 lessons covering the topics listed above. A helpful Unit Overview download is available for each unit that includes objectives and estimated length of time to complete. Quizzes are included. A “Where Can Coding Take You?” poster visually charts your course.
Another way to use the site is to take a tour of the major web technologies through Code Year, culminating in building an interactive website.
Of course, if you prefer the à la carte method, just scroll to the bottom and pick your course.
Amazing tool for the homeschool handy-mom — and it’s free!
